I wanted the top of the stairs area to be a huge hangout space for both kids and adults. This space has so many bright colours and patterns just as I wanted it. It has areas for both studying or getting homework done, and for hanging out. So kick back and let your creativity flow... This chandelier with be placed twice in the room... once over the table and once over the lounge area! It is beautiful and simple but has a Moroccan vibe 4. Some more pattern to liven up the room. These chairs are in the same colour scheme as the chaise but less vibrant. They fit perfectly and I love the shape. 9. These baskets will be placed along the wall to hold extra pillows, blankets and other things that may be necessary. I found these garland and I thought it would be perfect for the room. It will be hung along the ceiling over the room in a pattern like the photo on the right! This room definitely has a different feeling compared to the rest of the house so far but I love the colourful feel it has! xo

This powder room is definitely the smallest room in the house, and therefore I thought it was the perfect space to make a huge impact. This room has relatively high traffic because it is the only bathroom on the main floor and it will be used when guest come over. I wanted it to be warm but also make an immediate impact off the very white mud room and I think I achieved that. When I was talking about an immediate impact this is what I'm talking about! This wallpaper will only be on the wall with the sink and toilet but it is very visible as soon as you walk in which is what I wanted. This mirror will be hung above the sink along with two pendant light fixtures. Obviously this is not to scale but it gives you an idea. The other lighting in the room will be simple recessed lighting. 3. The flooring will be laid in this pattern and the tiles will be simple white subway tiles. I wanted the flooring to be white and simple in order to allow the accent wall to be the focus. 4. I love these gold animal heads. I chose to hang them in a vertical order to add high to the room. Everything in the bathroom is pretty low to the ground, these will add hight and interest. 5. This horizontal flower display will be perfect for the room to add another decor element. Its so pretty with the yellow flowers to compliment the wallpaper and it will span most of the wall. Finally these are the two hand towels I chose. They work in the room and will add something to the vanity shelf. The main floor is officially finished! Its time to go upstairs! xo
A mud room is supposed to be functional over 'fashionable', but I think you can make it both. Not a whole lot of detail to this hallway turned mud room but it definitely will get a lot of traffic so it needed to look pretty while being simple and sturdy. I have designed a built in storage locker system and bench into the one wall leaving the opposing wall to be for decor. I decided to add this hook system with the cubbies for extra open storage for the kids or dog stuff. Its easy access and visible for all the see so nothing goes missing before you head out the door. Plus this is a place to hang coats when guests are over so they don't have to go into the family lockers. I am officially at camp :) so you will start getting bi-weekly updates hopefully with lots of pictures! Happy Tuesday xo
A home office needs to be a clean space for anyone to get work done. Though sometimes offices can be designated for one person, I have designed this to be a space for anyone, though mostly the adults of the house, to get work done. It is located close to the action of the house so they are still easily accessible, but the glider doors can keep you tucked away. This colour is called Blue Haze by Benjamin Moore. I love the softness of this colour, it has a lot of white in it which makes it soft enough for the whole room. 1. The desk is arguably the most important part of any office and this desk is one that can stay for a lifetime. It has clean lines and a modern shape. It is made of stain white oak and the best part is that this desk is huge, big enough for multiple people to work at! 4. To add another pattern to this room I chose this rug. The pattern in simple enough to not overwhelm the room but it definitely adds some interest.
7. These cute floral pendants will hang on either side of the mirror which will be centred on its side. Hope this office inspires a lot of hard work and family time! xo
The living room is an important part of any house! It is a place to hang out with family and friends, relax and de stress. I wanted this living room to be light and inviting while still being functional. The living room has eye lines from the entrance, office and kitchen so it needs to be visually appealing from all angles. Go take a look :) 1. I custom designed this couch at restoration Hardware to make it look exactly as I wanted it to. I love the fabric, its grey but has a subtle purple hue to it and I think its perfect. With the rest of the neutral theme in this room its the perfect jumping off point. 6. I love the pattern on this rug. Its a simple running pattern but it is not too busy to be overwhelming. The colours are neutral to add to the overall vibe of the room. A couple of each of these pillows will be used around the room as decoration! Next up is the office! xo
I have always been in love with black rooms. I know it not very common to see and the thought is pretty dark and daring but I love the look and the tone it sets. So when I decided to design in hypothetical house that was the first thing I knew I wanted... a black room. At first I wanted it to be the living room, but the living room in this house has basically no walls and it would lose the effect, so I decided to go with the dining room. It's big enough and I have place three large windows to keep the space open and light. This paint colour was definitely my jumping off point for the room so I kept everything else pretty light, with honestly not a whole lot of colour. This paint colour is by Benjamin Moore, called Black Beauty. 4. Here is where the colour starts coming in! I loved this rug for this room because it is a bold accent of colour and add some fun to the room. It has a lot of personality, but the simplicity of the rest of the room allows for it. These plates will be used as the art piece on the back wall between the two windows in the dining room. They will be arranged in a random order in a random arrangement. Enjoy your meal! xo
The perfect little window lined breakfast nook for the perfect little kitchen! This breakfast nook is just off the kitchen so it needed to be similar and cohesive with the kitchen scheme. Take a look :) The floor plan for the nook is super simple. The seats have cushions and line the walls just underneath the windows. The window are from the benches to the ceiling and have white trim. These curtains are currently floor to ceiling but I will trim them down to just fit the windows. They are pretty and delicate and provide just the right amount of protection. This table is from Restoration Hardware and the base is wood to match the kitchen table with a white marble top. The white keeps with the neutral theme of the nook while being easy to clean and bright! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, may as well eat it somewhere relaxing! xo
The kitchen is the heart of the home. Food is extremely important to family and socialization, and to living :) So much time is spent in a kitchen so you want it to be functional and beautiful. Lots of sitting areas and an open plan help this kitchen to achieve great things. The kitchen is located here! Its a big open space connected to both the living room and dining room.
This kitchen has so many places to sit and eat, hang out, do homework, and cook. The flooring is the same in the entire house and it will look beautiful here as well. 2. The island is a huge part of the kitchen! This is where most of the prep work for meals happens and is a great place for eating and socializing. The side of the island facing the stove will have the cabinet base with the sink in the centre (2) and it will be flanked by the pull drawer base (1) on either side. The other side of the island will have no cabinetry so it can be comfortable for seating. The island will be painted in Wedding Veil (4) fro Benjamin Moore. Finally the pot rack (5) will hang over the island in the centre and the lights (3) will hang on either side.
The lowers under the counter top will be a mixture of drawers (1) and (2). The area above the windows by the sink with be lined with cabinets like (3). These add open storage to display pretty pieces and kitchen plates etc. Finally all of the drawers and cabinets will have these pulls (4). All of the cabinetry will be painted in the same colour as the island. 8. This area will be open storage to hold everything that the kitchen needs that won't be going in drawers. I decided against doing upper cabinets because I wanted to ;eave the kitchen open and have lots of natural light with the window. This area adds a lot of interest and is a great way to display things while being organized. The area will have 4 of these shelving units. Now to add a little colour into the room :) I purposefully kept most of the kitchen in neutrals and light colours so that it can grow with the family and over time. But to add some colour and some personality I've chosen the colours teal (like the walls) and red. Hope this gives you some cooking inspiration! xo
I think that coming out of high school I got too easily sucked into the mindset that you need a high profile career in order to be successful. I went into first year looking at becoming a Lawyer or something of that nature when in reality I think the title looked more appealing then the actual job itself. In my first year of university I realized that I love being creative and I want to be able to be working at something I love all of the time. I've decided that I want to become an interior designer. I guess for you to understand this you will have to learn a little bit more about me... interior designing and design itself has always been a passion of mine. At the age of 10 my first ever DS game was an interior design simulator, and I remember playing that game all the way down to Boston on a family road trip. I also used to watch home design shows as a kid... like a lot of them. I guess I just never thought it would be something I could have as a career. I know this is a silly example but its the truth. I love organization, colours and styles of homes, I know that I would love to be an interior designer. I just finished first year so my goals and aspirations in life may change, but at this point in my life I know this is where I want to end up. So I guess we will have to just wait and see. Dream Home:So I have decided to design my dream home over the summer. Just as styles and whats 'in' shift and change, my style does too. But I know what I like and what I don't. So for the next couple of months I will be posting my dream house room by room to show a little bit of me and what I love! Floor Plans:Here are the floor plans for the house! I made them and they include everything that I will be designing over the next couple of months. Its obviously a very simple plan but it all makes sense in terms of space and an open layout with lots of room to pull things together. This is post #1, the exterior and floor plan.
Exterior:While I don't know exactly what I would in terms of the architectural form of the house, I know that I love white houses with dark roofs. There is something so clean and simple about them and it just looks so nice against the green of the grass and trees. So no, my dream house does not look exactly like this, but this gives you the idea :) I hope you will follow along and watch as the house develops and is designed! I think in the end it will be fun to watch it all come together! xo
Hope everyone had a great weekend! I needed a little break from life on campus so I headed home for the weekend on Friday afternoon. I find that a weekend at home honestly re-energizes me for so many reasons. I find that even the little things, such as showering in a nice shower, eating home cooked food and just being able to lounge around with family help in a huge way. Port Hope, my home town, is about an hour away from Toronto and is definitely considered a town. It is pretty tiny but definitely has a lot of great character and small town charm! I loved driving around to take these pictures. My perfect combination is a pair of white converse and ripped boyfriend jeans. I never felt comfortable wearing boyfriend jeans before this past year... I always felt that they were too loose and unflattering. They have definitely grown on me! This is definitely one of my go-to outfits for the transitions between seasons! Either between fall and winter or winter and spring, it can either be worn on its own or with a coat or light jacket for a colder day. Today, in between locations for pictures, I had on my black North Face vest as an additional layer and I was the perfect temperature. I am still not a fan of the overly ripped jean look, so I made these myself to make them exactly as I wanted them! The whole process is pretty easy once you get started, it is just time consuming if anything! The tutorial for these jeans will be up on the blog on Wednesday! Happy Monday! xo
