I have only been at Queen's University for 6 weeks, and the time is flying by. One thing that I have found to be super important is getting off campus for a bit every week to hang out with friends. Another thing I have found... I have made the greatest friends here. I am so grateful for them on a daily basis. So today, on this chilly Sunday afternoon, we decided to take a break from the studying and our lovely res sun room and adventure downtown. We needed some good food and some time together off campus to clear our heads and get a break from the massive organization that is campus living. We wandered into The Works and had some much needed comfort food. The reason I find this so important is because Queen's can honestly sometimes feel like a bubble. If you tried hard enough you could go weeks without ever taking a step off campus. Its a nice break and is a stress reliever to get away for a bit. We had the best day today with many laughs and a lot of good food. So 10/10 recommending to get out, off campus and explore. You never know what you will find! My friend Hannah and I decided to dive into tackling a new experience at university... the res kitchen. I would like to remind you that this kitchen is definitely not magazine ready and has definitely seen better days, but we were ready for the challenge. We decided to stick to some basics... rice krispie squares and chocolate covered strawberries. Little did we know we would have much less equipment then we were both used to. Tips for using your a residence kitchen: 1. Make sure you bring everything you need, and I mean EVERYTHING. 2. Try to find recipes that need very few ingredients, these will be the easiest to buy groceries for. Since you do need to bring everything. 3. Make sure you are resourceful. You can usually find what you need to substitute in a material or utensil if you think outside of the box! 4. You may have to deal with some prehistoric appliances! When in doubt just start pushing buttons and hope for the best. Thinking outside of the box at its finest moment is definitely realizing that you have no pot to melt marshmallows in... Thankfully with some quick thinking we found a pan and used the oven as a heat course. Our theory... anything with butter, marshmallows and rice krispies would not end up bad no matter how they were made. Honestly the key to success is just to laugh and work with what you have got! We definitely added years to our lives with the amount of laughter. And we definitely enjoyed the visits from friends as our progress became more and more edible! The clean up was definitely worth it. Thankfully we remembered soap! xo
